The german language uses a construct called „generic masculine“. Photographers are „Fotografen“ (engl.: „male photographers“). While the term includes female photographers, one will always first think of men in the profession. When visiting the photography festival Les Rencontres d’Arles I met so many impressive young female photographers that I wanted to celebrate them and call them what they are: „Fotografinnen.“
